The owner of an XL Bully who “didn’t know” his dog was a banned breed will have to wait until October to find out if the dog will be destroyed.
Liam Matthews, 23, of Spinnaker Close in Cowes pleaded guilty to possessing/having custody of a fighting dog when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier today (Tuesday).
Skyler, the 3-year-old XL Bully, was seized on 15th April after members of the public raised concerns about a dog in the local area.
Since the seizure, Skyler has been in police kennels.
The court heard that Matthews rescued the dog from a friend and that he was unaware that Skyler was a banned breed.
Defending, Nick Muir told the court that Matthews is looking into securing a license from DEFRA to allow him to legally keep the dog, if it isn’t destroyed.
Magistrates adjourned the case until 31st October due to insufficient evidence of the dog’s behaviour being available to ascertain if a destruction order is the appropriate course of action in the case.

Bring back dog licences, the government want cash, then do this.
I agree.
I use to pay a fee years ago and am happy to do so
again.
Also to generate extra revenue the council could
rollout islandwide permit parking charges.
On the mainland so many locations no longer offer
free parking.
The island is a dinosaur when it comes to generating
extra revenue.
What has parking got to do with this subject? It’s about an xl bully dog!
I remember when it was law to have a valid licence to keep a dog, at a cost of 37 1/2 pence back in the day. Only problem if this was re-introduced, it would be considerably more expensive which would result in more genuine, law abiding people being forced to give up their pets, meaning more pressure on rehoming centres which are almost at full capacity as it is, due to the rising cost of living, spiralling dog food and vet fees etc.
I as a dog owner, not in favour of re-introduction of the dog licence, but certainly more needs to be done regarding dangerous dogs.
This article concerns an XL Bully. So why does the picture show a Dogue de Bordeaux, which is NOT a banned breed? BTW, bring back dog licences.
destroy it
Why not I destroy your mum
Why are people bringing parking into this?! Being dinosaurs often makes us unique, It’s lovely to have free parking areas even though they’re few and far between.
Permits for certain breeds of dog could be introduced.
I agree pressure on animal welfare services are bad enough without loads more ending up in them if people were forced to give up their beloved animals. Also there’d be no need if there weren’t idiots breeding dangerous dogs and using them as a vile sport in the first place
