Savings might be used to help dig the Isle of Wight Council out of a £10million overspend this financial year, its finance director has revealed. However, Head of Finance Chris Ward has also warned dipping into the local authority’s savings could leave it short next year and he says the cash would need to be replaced. Adult social care services, home-to-school transport, growing numbers of children in care and the Medina and The Heights leisure centres are areas that have required more money than was originally budgeted for. On Tuesday night, Mr Ward revealed the budget is predicted to be over £10million short. He said the gap could be covered by savings and the COVID-19 contingency fund, bringing the overspend down to £3.2million. Further cash could come from the corporate contingency fund, but it would mean any ‘risks’ later in the financial year would not be covered, Mr Ward said. He said the council could use further reserves to balance the books at the end of the year, if required. Mr Ward warned an overspend was likely to impact next year’s finances as well and said it had not been accounted for in the Isle of Wight Council’s medium-term financial plans. Conservative councillor, Chris Quirk, said carrying an overspend was not sustainable and said a fair funding review was needed, to give the council more cash. The long-awaited review will not happen in this parliamentary session, said Mr Ward, but he hoped the Government’s Autumn statement, the local government finance statement and adult social care funding would provide more council cash.

Why ?. Because this council does not spend small to save big, it takes service’s away, stops recruitment, spends triple on agency staff. Adult social care is wasted on endless assessment and delays of discharge from hospital,no support for families to look after relatives meaning need for higher residential care cost. children’s care,no support for extended family or grandparents, end in foster care /residential, costing thousands a week.School transport,so many empty seats on busses, but instead of allowing cheap seats the council try and be greddy so bus stays half empty. Taxis – why not mini busses collecting several children? Some schools can have twenty taxis!. Probation/prisoners doing gardening and grafting work- free. Fleet of cars!.
cut back on adult social sponging and free loading parasites that get taxis for their kids to go to school at our expense
it really isn’t difficult to say no, pay for it yourself or go without
And get the OAPs off the bus! Drive a car like a normal person, I’m fed up with subsidising your life!
So when they announced they were spending £1.3 million on County Hall’s heating system, lighting and windows they knew they had an overspend on their accounts. £1.3 million wasted on a building which is half empty and a question mark over its future as there was talk about demolishing it and building houses. Money wasted on the constant repairs to the floating bridge that was not fit for purpose, where has the compensation money they were awarded gone. Residents of the Island need an explanation why a £10 million overspend exists and what it has been spent on.
all it is, is blistering incompetence by the so called experts that have been employed or elected.
WOW… Where is the money going….? I would love an independent review of the Councils finances because things are not adding up, even the floating bridge farce cannot account for all of it.
Is this just a warning that our next Council Tax rate will be at maximum again just to cover the Councils inadequacy, this is just the norm nowadays.
No this is a warning they need more money to tart the council offices up and top up their pension pot’s…..
Agree they should let us the cash cow’s know every where every penny of our money has been spent!!!!!
Because all they seem to do is blame everyone else!!!!!!
Yet how long have this motley crew been bodging it ???????
Alliance…lol …..
Good. The council will soon be taken over by central governement and real waste can be addressed without dimwit councillors getting in the way. Those mainland investment properties should be sold first. Councils should not be in the business of trying to make money with our hard earned cash. They should charge us the minimum amount for the minimum service.
I actually p*ssed myself laughing at that.
Wait, you weren’t actually serious, were you? Central government will address waste?
Like the way they spaffed £millions on duff PPE and generally made £millions for themselves and their chums while people died during the pandemic?
That central government?
You had best go and change your trousers before you stink out the dole office.
Councils are just thieves and take take and do what they like with our money. It’s the council that force working people into poverty and homelessness, then they come along and try to give image they are helping. This council like others in country needs to be taken over by central government and do away with half staff and senior management that do nothing other than create problems to keep looking busy and jobs. Everything within council is over complicated!.
Could start by turning the lights off at County Hall instead of leaving them all on overnight. If they can’t address the simple problem of turning lights on and off they’re not not fit to make decisions about how to spend our money. Councils should be run by people with a successful track record in business.
how right you are , also I bet the whole building is heated to a comfy 20 or so degrees when I know people in their homes aren’t because they can’t afford to put heating on and walk round the house in their coats (TRUE)
Sat In cozy offices gawping out the window (I’ve seen them ) wearing a shirt ,,, or blouse windows wide open .
