An investigation into the circumstances which led to severe flooding in parts of the Island this summer has been launched by the Isle of Wight Council.
As previously reported by Island Echo, flash floods in July and August led to blocked roads and submerged properties after the Island was hit by spells of torrential rain.
The council has now started an investigation to better understand the causes and any factors that may have influenced the severity of the flooding and will publish a report early next year.
The work is being carried out under the requirements of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 and will see the council speak with residents affected and private bodies with flood management responsibilities
As a result of the outcome of the investigation, the report will consider potential options to mitigate future flooding.
Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Cabinet member for the environment, said:
“It is essential that we look into the causes and impacts of the flooding that occurred earlier this year. Many residents were adversely affected and much distress and damage to properties resulted.
“I hope as many residents as possible will take the opportunity to contribute to the investigation. The information people supply will be crucial to helping us to understand the impact of the flooding on the local community, and will help us to consider potential options to take preventative steps and to mitigate the risk of similar flooding occurring in the future.”
Residents affected by the flooding during July and August 2021 are encouraged to fill in the flood investigation form at Flood Risk and Watercourse Consents – Service Details (iow.gov.uk) where more information can also be found.
Any relevant supporting evidence, such as photographs, records of emergency service attendance and insurance claims, can be sent to [email protected]
Well Godshill has had it’s fair share of problems ever since the new building works !!!!!
Just goes to show the island will stink or sink !!!!!!!!
Maybe common sense will raise it’s head ??????
Oh no we have to build build build !!!!!!!
Council tax has to keep rising even though everything else is going up up up they may realise you only earn what earn and cash is not elastic ….surprise surprise …..
That’s common sense…..
How about you just use our council tax for services and not your pension pot the island may survive ???,?
And the conclusion by the Council was, it rained!
Yea . The council have found that the main cause of the flooding was water. Just stop building, building, building.
and clean out the ditches, simples.
blocked inadequate drainage possibly?
Southern Water should start clearing the rivers of silt build up again. Flooding like this never happened before when it was done annually.
Totally agree with you, I think though its either the council or the environment agency’s job to clear the ditches, and I can remember when there was a digger clearing the ditch along Morton, if they did the job, then we wouldn’t flood at all. Didn’t the council say when Morton Road flooded last time that they would look into it to make sure it didn’t happen again, well IOW Council get it sorted!
They don’t do that no more, same as the hedge cutting and the weeding.
Because of the nature and the global warming, where have you been for the last six months.
Don’t you know about the Amazon woods and the polar bears…?
Dealing with the river flooding of course!!!!!!!! And yes I do know about the Amazon forests and the polar bears.
And nobody ever cares about the panda’s, always about polar bears.
How many wild flowers and the nature do you see on the icebergs ?
None. That is why the Amazon woods need protecting.
They can’t even fill a sink hole very quickly, don’t expect them to do much more.
Study to investigate flooding problem. Perhaps stop covering all those porous green areas, with impervious houses. Saving the devestation to people suffering the dreadful consequences.
Caused by the unwanted increase in building and associated concrete. And all of those front gardens paved over
Had no idea the council were doing stand up comedy…
It rained – hard. Very hard. Investigation done
Climate change, investigation done. Any down votes are morons with their head up their arse. We’ve raised global temperatures in the last 100 years more than it took nature in 100,000 years, fact!!!!
Your facts are wrong bud. The climate has varied considerably, well before man was here. And would have done so with or without us.
Just Governments can’t tax a volcano, or massive forest fires, or sun spots or other natural events, BUT they can spread blame, guilt and pay for such to the gullible.. whereby you enter the equation. FACT
Because of heavy rain.
It would probably be more productive to investigate why that couple drove their car into the flood water at Nettlestone Hill in the photo. And kept going as the water got deeper and covered the bonnet.
