A collision involving a child on a balance bike and a car on the main road in Wroxall has seen cordons erected this morning (Wednesday).
Police and paramedics were called to the scene on St John’s Road at around 08:45.
At the scene, a child on a small bicycle has collided with a car travelling out of Wroxall towards Whiteley Bank. A cordon has been erected around the scene.
Those involved are being tended to in the back of an ambulance.
As a result, the main road through the village is blocked between Appuldurcombe Road and St Martin’s Road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for comment.
UPDATE @ 09:45 – Police have confirmed that the child involved is a young boy. He has sustained what the Force has said is a ‘serious’ leg injury and is being taken to hospital.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) has touched down near the scene at Wroxall Primary School, suggesting that the youngster is to be taken straight to a mainland hospital.
UPDATE @ 10:05 – A hard road closure is now in place as emergency crews work to piece together the events of this morning’s collision.
Flying medics remain on scene.
UPDATE @ 10:45 – After around 60-minutes on scene, HIOWAA has lifted off and has conveyed the child to Southampton General Hospital.
Road closures remain in place, with all traffic being diverted via Shanklin in both directions.
