A contingency fire crew have extinguished a shelter blaze in East Cowes this evening (Thursday).
The non-FBU fire crew, based at Drill Hall Road in Newport during the firefighter strikes, were called to the scene on East Cowes Esplanade shortly before 20:30 following reports of a wooden shelter well ablaze.
Police are now investigating the incident, which has resulted in the wooden seating area being completely destroyed.
At its peak, the smoke could be seen from West Cowes and prompted nearly 20 calls to 999 operators.
UPDATE @ 08:55 – A motorcyclist was treated for minor burns last night following another incident in East Cowes.
The rider’s motorcycle caught fire on Whippingham Road shortly before 22:30, prompting another turn out for the contingency crew.
Paramedics treated the male rider at the scene.
