A trio of Isle of Wight Squash Academy talents did themselves proud at the recent British Junior Championship.
Finn Husson, Olivia Holbrook and Millie Holbrook competed at the British Junior Championship (31st Oct-3rd Nov) in the boys’ U11, girls’ U11 and girls’ U15 respectively.
The BJC is the second-biggest junior tournament in England, and the competition is extremely high. Each player had to play 5 matches to determine their final positions.
Finn, only a week after his 9th birthday, managed to hold his seeding of 17-24 to come 20th out of a massive 39 entries. Olivia confidently made her way through the quarter-finals in great form and played a gruelling and nail-biting 5-setter in the semi-final against a talented Elsie Griffiths from Wales.
Although Olivia didn’t make it to the final this year, she was hot on the heels of the competition, finishing in 4th overall. Millie, Olivia’s older sister, had the toughest matches out of the 3 youngsters and achieved 23rd out of 31 and also held her seeding. She battled her way through every round, showing true strength of character against some very strong opposition.
A spokesperson from the Isle of Wight Squash Academy, has said:
“Congratulations to all three. They were back on the court the day after at their home club here on the Island, @1Leisure’s Westridge Club, and got straight into training and having fun again, which is by far the best result of the weekend.
“Good luck with your next tournament at the Manchester Gold Level event in December.”
Great to see the island youngsters doing so well.
