Island Roads have had to remove a severely damage traffic light from a busy crossing in Ryde after it was struck by a coach.
The incident occurred earlier this week on Pellhurst Road, at the traffic light-controlled junction with Queens Road.
It’s understood a coach hit the street furniture, knocking it to the ground. This has resulted in the entire pole being removed and the pedestrian crossing closed.
Motorists have reported that the situation is now dangerous as it is not entirely clear where the traffic light is for motorists heading towards Binstead, with no nearside light in place at all.
A similar situation happened in recent weeks at the junction of Argyll Street, where the traffic light remains at an odd angle.
Island Roads says that specialist repairs will need to be carried out, which will be done as soon as possible. In the meantime, pedestrians are being directed further up to the road to use the crossing at Argyll Street.

Dear god, is it or rather was it not big or bright enough?
This pelikan crossing has been closed for at least two weeks now if not longer (I know because I walk by it every day!) and Island Roads still hasn’t done anything to this one nor to the blocked pelikan crossing at the junction of Pelhurst Rd and Queens Rd.
They are on a break
I saw one near miss this morning there drivers unaware as traffic light gone and they dont look at the one that is there and this afternoon same again car nearly hit one coming from queens road when queens road lights wete on green black car just rushed through oblivious
Give them chance, haven’t sent enough emails to each other yet and probably can’t find an electrician, arguing with Insurance etc while lives at risk.
That’s because Island roads don’t know how to fix them they have to come from the mainland to repair it just like when the lights at the Hare and hounds got damaged
Brain dead mainland coach driver’s, expect it to get worse as Summer goes on.
We need to ban mainland coaches coming over, just send passengers over and pick up with our coaches problem solved
Won’t notice it gone, majority of Island motorists don’t stop at
Traffic Lights anyway, at the bottom of George Street Ryde
Motorists are constantly turning into the NO right Stree from the
Esplanade into George Street.
NO TRAFFIC RULES ON LAWLESS ISLE
Someone buy that coach driver a drink…many on the island are fed up with unnecessary traffic stoppages from either temporary traffic lights or in this case the button pusher pole has been broken so happy days for everyone..it’s possible for pedestrians to cross with sense without this street furniture
Mr T why not go back to munching your pie’s lardy boy, instead of spitting pie crust on your monitor and talking crap.
Your one cell pea brain don’t make any sense.
For the 2nd time a coach attempted to go up Ryde pier at least this time only got as far as the left turn onto the pier itself however; still caused mayhem as it had to reverse back onto the main road.
The last coach made it all the way to pier head!
Can these drivers not read the warning at the turning to the pier and have they no common sense?
