A suspected electrical fault has sparked a fire at a flat in central Ryde, which has tragically claimed the lives of 3 cats inside this evening (Monday).
3 fire appliances from Ryde, Newport and Shanklin are on scene at George Street, where a fire has broken out in a ground-floor flat.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the property, which has been significantly smoke and fire damaged. In total, 6 BA and 2 hose reel jets have been used.
It was just before 17:00 that the alarm was raised when the building’s working, linked smoke alarms activated, allowing all residents to escape uninjured.
Although no casualties have been reported, allowing paramedics to stand down, it has been confirmed that the fire has claimed the lives of 3 animals.
George Street is currently blocked between Esplanade and Cross Street with all traffic diverting locally.
UPDATE @18:00 – The fire has been extinguished, with positive pressure ventilation used to clear lingering smoke.
Investigation work continues to determine the exact cause.
UPDATE @ 19:30 – Crews have now stood down from the incident.
The homeowner is being cared for by the British Red Cross’ Fire Emergency Support team.
