UPDATED: Police have cordoned off Quay Road car park on Ryde Esplanade this morning (Saturday) due to parts of Ryde Arena’s roof becoming dislodged in the high winds.
Firefighters from Ryde were called to the scene at around 11:40 due to the dangerous structure.
The car park directly outside Hovertravel’s Ryde terminal and beside the ice rink has been cordoned off amid fears the sections of roof could be blown onto the ground, endangering members of the public.
Hovertravel’s terminal remains open as normal, however cars are being directed into the main long stay car park to drop off and pick up passengers.
UPDATE @ 13:25 – Ryde Arena remains open to the public as normal today and scheduled ice hockey matches are to go ahead.
Firefighters have now left the scene as they were unable to safely gain access to the roof to make it safe. Police have left the scene in the hands of the Isle of Wight Council awaiting emergency repairs to the roof – the car park remains closed.
UPDATE @ 22:15 – Quay Road car park will reopen to the public at 07:00 tomorrow morning, according to the Isle of Wight Council.
