Emergency services are responding to a car that has overturned onto its roof between the villages of Niton and Whitwell this afternoon (Friday).
2 fire appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service – from Shanklin and Newport stations – have been mobilised alongside resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Police.
The incident has happened on Chatfeild Road and has involved 2 vehicles – a Toyota Rav 4 and a Land Rover Discovery.
The crash occurred shortly after 14:00.
The road has been closed in both directions leading to lengthy diversions for motorists and Southern Vectis Route 6 buses.
UPDATE @ 15:12 – The road has now reopened in both directions, although recovery of the vehicles involved is yet to take place.

On its roof, well that’s a surprise
Hope everyone ok, unreal yet another car on roof,
Hope they are OK to do it again…
Jesus it’s literally one or sometimes two every day now.
You lot are barking mad over there….
Woof woof, grrr grrr
Meoooow…..grr grr
Only one winner in that fight. Bosh!
Looks brand new with ultra clean underside
on test drive
I’m sure this never happened as often before they started putting all this new road surface down.
Do you mean the road surfaces that were skimpped and now sinking and potholes appearing at rate of knots? The roads are now back in the state they were before PFI.
There has been a number of suggestions that the newer surfaces lack grip. There’s some merit in your assertion and it needs investigating in my opinion, to prove or disprove the allegations.
What absolute tosh you speak, its nothing to do with the road surface its the Nut behind the wheel that causes this and nothing more.
Do not speak tosh. It was just a simple question I felt had to be asked. Not saying these car flips are caused by it.
Agreed! Doesn’t matter what the road surface is if you can’t point it in the right direction to start with.
Is this some secret IOW competition for the best flip?
Luckily nobody was going for a stroll on that pavement, god damn, that would be horrible way to go :S
I’m swear I’m getting roll bars fitted to my car
Where they over 65 ?
Really???? Of course younger drivers don’t flip cars do they?
I wonder how this happened, rear offside tyre of the Discovery appears flat, but can’t see any obvious sign of impact?
More bad IW drivers.
If they want to play Dodgems, they can visit Sandown Pier
Only £2 a go and they won’t end up on their roof.
A whole Days fun in one
TOO MUCH SPEED /LACK OF CONCENTRATION/DRIVING WITHOUT DUE CARE AND ATTENTION .Try that for starters.
OK got your entry for best car on roof picture 22/23.This competition was due to end shortly but due to loads of entries from drivers on the IOW it has now been extended.Only pictures of cars on roof to count so get out flipping now.First prize 12 points on your licence and 10 1hour driving lessons without blindfold.
Has Ventnor Fire Station closed down?
One less car on the road
Alan Titmarch’s tedious, sugar-coated TV programme about the island has yet to feature the IW phenomenon of cars overturning on their roofs,
Mind you, Titmarch has not mentioned the sewage infested rivers and seas that surround the island either.
Too busy fawning over that slimeball Howard Spooner at the The George in Yarmouth. Doing his very best Leslie Phillips accent.
Don’t vehicles have anti-roll bars these days?
If you want to learn how to drive upside-down, take your driving lessons on the Isle of Wight
Not these people have skills, flipping cars like this… may have to give it a try in my CH-R… more good drivers will be along soon???
This is getting a daily event take more care people.
When cars had heavy chassis it would have been more difficult to end up on their roofs BUT, there would probably have been more fatalities
It’s just the Isle of wight stunt team practicing. Ted downer is jumping the Medina in a wheel barrow next Saturday.
Who’s to say it’s not people that have come to live on the island who don’t know the island roads and drive like their still on the mainland. Lol
Nawww he just wants a belly rub
I am starting to wonder if the Island has different rules of physics that the rest of the world. How are we able to get so many of our cars on their roofs? Achievement unlocked. LoL
Well they must have been gunning it which means they were speeding as that is a 30mph road and not even David Copperfield can put a car on its roof at 30mph oh and can’t park there mate
Surely you all know about the gravity vortices on the island. They have become more frequent due to the high density of conspiracy nuts on the island. Happily driving along and boom, gravity reverses and your car is on its roof. It’ll get worse. Mark my words.
What was that? Just spotted a possible alien spacecraft and must investigate … update later …
The problem lies with birth certificates. With Ley lines and lots of clever Greek stuff proving that history has weight, Island born people may be less likely to head a top notch company these days, mostly because Uffa Fox is dead, but the hollibobbers are here again and its better when they are down because they tell us…
Why not fit wheels to the roof!
Why is there always a Yellow Vauxhall Corsa HJ62ZPV
parked on the pavement outside the Council Houses along Great Preston Road
Do the Tenants at no. 90 think they own the Pavement?
so frustrating that 1 Household can bring a complete Road to a standstill
Where is the District Steward of Ryde, does he not drive down
Great Preston Road to see how idiots park!
Pavements where I come from are for pedestrians not Idiots parking a vehicle.
I always wondered what an inverter was for.
I love smoking up and then driving
Only in Ohio would this conundrum occur
Nearly one a day now how do you manage that ?? its just bad driving…you can’t park there mate…
