A serious crash involving a car on its roof, on the road between Godshill and Whitwell, has led to a call out for the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance tonight (Saturday).
Emergency services are in attendance on Whitwell Road, where it is said a vehicle has come to rest upside down on its roof on a narrow and winding section of carriageway near Roud.
Police, fire and ambulance crews are all on scene and working to treat those involved, but the situation is such that the advanced skills of the flying medics is needed.
The air ambulance has, in the past few minutes, landed in a field beside the road.
Police have closed Whitwell Road between Beacon Alley and Sheepwash Lane until further notice.
Tonight’s incident comes just hours after another car rolled over near Rookley, and amid plummeting temperatures with the coldest night of winter so far expected, with the mercury perhaps going as low as -5c.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – The National Police Air Service helicopter from Bournemouth has been drafted in, circling the skies directly above the crash scene.
Meanwhile, the air ambulance has been stood down from the incident and has departed the scene, returning to base at Thruxton.
UPDATE @ 22:35 – If has been confirmed that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised 2 appliances from Newport and Ryde, alongside the Rescue Support Vehicle from Newport and a duty officer.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service deployed 2 ambulance crews, a critical care paramedic and an operational commander – all of which have now stood down.
Whitwell Road is closed and will remain so for several hours, into the early hours of Sunday morning.
Island Echo understands the Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland has been requested to attend tonight’s crash, indicating the severity.
UPDATE SUNDAY – Police have confirmed that a man in his 40s tragically died in last night’s crash.

I fear when I drive along this road, it is very narrow in parts and
is difficult for vehicles to pass safely especially in the daytime
when the sun is blazing, visibility is poor.
