UPDATED WITH VIDEO: A car has burst into flames in Ryde this afternoon (Sunday), leading to the closure of the main Ryde to Newport road at Binstead.
One fire appliance from Ryde Fire Station was called to the scene at around 16:30 after the car, thought to be a Mazda, caught fire whilst travelling on Binstead Road towards Ryde.
A witness has told Island Echo how the fire appeared to start under the bonnet before an ‘explosion’ caused the whole vehicle to become engulfed by flames. Thankfully, the occupants have escaped uninjured.
Firefighters are now working to extinguish the fire.
UPDATE @ 17:15 – Police have closed the road at the junction of Queens Road and at the junction of Ringwood Road. As a result, Southern Vectis Route 9 buses will only serve as far as Wootton.
The fire has been brought under control however the fire crew remain on scene.
UPDATE @ 18:30 – Binstead Hill has now re-opened and firefighers have returned to station. All Route 4 and 9 buses will be back on track very soon.
The car, which has been destroyed, is being recovered by Stag Lane Motors.
