There are added delays on a major diversion route into Newport this morning (Thursday), owing to a vehicle fire on Whiterails Road.
Island Echo understands that a single pumping appliance from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is on scene near to Monkey Haven.
The incident began at around 08:15.
The vehicle involved, a BMW X1, has sustained fire damage.
As a result of the incident, traffic in both directions is very heavy – even more so given the route being the main diversion route for the ongoing Fairlee Road works.
Elsewhere, there are major delays in Blackwater due to a broken-down vehicle outside Wight Building Materials. Traffic between there and Arreton, heading towards Newport, is extremely heavy.
If possible, motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being.
Southern Vectis Route 5 & 9 are diverting via Long Lane and Downend until further notice.
UPDATE – It has been confirmed that an oil leak sparked this morning’s incident.
Traffic has now returned to normal, albeit elevated, levels.
