St John’s Hill in Ryde – the main road through the town – will be closed to all traffic tonight (Monday) to allow for resurfacing.
Island Roads were unable to complete carriageway resurfacing of High Street (Star Street to Green Street) on Friday ‘due to a number of factors’. As a result, work has been pushed back to tonight.
The PFI contractors will be resurfacing across the junction of Green Street and St John’s Hill, meaning all traffic will be diverted locally. Heavy goods are expected to be diverted along the Esplanade.
No through traffic will be able to travel from the junction of Prince Street (St John’s Hill) to the junction with West Street (Green Street), although access to Station Street should be maintained.
In an attempt to minimise disruption the closure will not be in place until at least 20:30.
The resurfacing of the other half of Ryde High Street has been delayed due to scaffolding between between Bank Gardens and Well Street. Island Roads are unable to complete the scheme until the scaffolding has been removed.
UPDATE TUESDAY – The road has now re-opened to all traffic.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 15:05 – St John’s Road will close once again tonight as works were not completed overnight.
Work will commence at 19:30, according to Island Roads.

Another balls up ….
No such place as Station Road probably means Station Close !!
St Johns Hill; should that not be St Johns Road?
St Johns Hill is from the railway bridge up towards Alexandra Road. Whereas, St Johns Road is from the opposite side of the railway bridge (Monkton Street) up towards Ryde High Street & Green Street.
