UPDATED: The lower part of Newport High Street has been closed due to a burst water main this lunchtime (Wednesday), adding to heavy traffic in and around Newport.
Motorists can expect added disruption throughout the remainder of today and potentially into the weekend as contractors begin work outside 16 High Street.
The road has been closed between Quay Street and Coppins Bridge with all traffic being diverted via St James Street, Hunnycross Way, Riverway and Medina Way.
UPDATE @ 14:13 – Due to the congestion in Newport Town Centre, a new route has been opened up to help drivers exit the town centre towards Ryde.
Traffic is now able to drive along Newport Quay from Quay Street and reach Fairlee Road via Seaclose (past the Premier Inn and Council planning offices) or via Hillside. The barriers at both locations have been opened.
The routes are for vehicles travelling OUT of Newport only.
UPDATE @ 14:42 – Newport High Street has been partially reopened.
Southern Water contractors have been able to open up 1 lane to traffic, easing some of the congestion in the area.
Parking has been suspended near to the burst to help with traffic flow.
