Burger King has submitted a planning application to open a second Isle of Wight drive-thru restaurant – this time in the car park of Tesco Extra in Ryde.
Rumours have been circulating for months about the potential for a drive-thru to be built at the far end of the supermarket car park, just metres away from the long-established McDonald’s.
These rumours intensified late last year when the former Click + Collect canopy was removed and the pick-up location shifted to in front of the store.
Now, official planning documents reveal that Burger King does indeed plan to open a new restaurant, with the creation of 35 local jobs.
Burger King operates an existing restaurant at the Coppins Bridge Retail Park site in Newport, which opened its doors in December 2019. Rivals McDonald’s plan to open a drive-thru at nearby St George’s Retail Park.
The 2,500sqft Ryde restaurant will boast 45 inside covers, a drive-thru lane, dedicated click & collect parking bays and outside seating. It is proposed that the outlet will be open daily between 07:00-23:00.
The development will mean the loss of 95 parking spaces for Tesco, but 20 parking spaces will be created for Burger King – a net loss of around 75.
The introduction of another chain takeaway in Ryde is huge news for local residents, who often feel the town is overlooked by retailers despite having the same population size as Newport.
Initial suggestions from the Isle of Wight Council are that the proposal is likely to be approved, following changes made as a result of given pre-planning advice. It’s thought that plans have been in the pipeline since at least August last year.
A decision is due to be made by April, but there is currently no suggestion of when Burger King plans to open in Ryde.
At least it will stop the Numpty’s causing traffic
problems when they go into McDonald’s
Lol
Now the Numpty’s will be clogging up Tesco
Car park instead.
Glad I shop at Morrison
oh good more litter thrown from the scum onto the roads..
Not to mention NO traffic control.
I cannot believe that IW Council let McDonald’s
get away with vehicles causing disruption on a
regular basis going into McDonald’s
“IT IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TOO HAPPEN”
I can only imagine a Mason runs the sh*thole, hence
no one doing anything about the disruption
McDonald’s causes.
