20130408-114713.jpgFire crews from Ryde, Shanklin and Ventnor were called to a suspected building fire in Shanklin this morning, which turned out to be a false alarm.

An emergency 999 call was made shortly after 11:00 reporting that black smoke was billowing from the rear of a property near to the former Siam Pearl at the rear of the High Street.

It was discovered upon arrival that the blaze was infact a controlled bonfire.

Speaking to workman at the scene, Island Echo understand that the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were informed of the intention for a bonfire, however the message was not relayed quick enough to control room staff before the three pumping appliances turned out.
