BAD GRUB AT SPOONS LED TO ‘PROLONGED ATTACK’ ON STAFF BY MAN WHO SMASHED WINDOW

A complaint about the quality of food on offer at Wetherspoons led to a Ryde man assaulting 2 members of staff and smashing a door, the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard this week.

44-year-old Richard Wetherick appeared before the bench on Tuesday charged with 2 counts of assault by beating and 1 of criminal damage, to the tune of £336.

Liz Miller, prosecuting, laid out the facts of the case. She said that at 23:38 on 17th June last year, Police were called to S Fowler & Co Wetherspoons in Union Street, Ryde. It was here that the defendant, of Vernon Square in Ryde, was arrested.

Earlier in the evening, Wetherick had attended the public house with friends for a meal. However, the food was not to the required standard and a replacement was requested. Things took a turn when the waiter allegedly – according to the defence – threw down the replacement meal on the table and made a comment about Wetherick’s appearance.

The court heard that Richard Wetherick left the pub but returned later on at around 23:20 and became abusive towards 2 members of staff, 1 of which was pushed backwards. Wetherick was asked to leave but refused, so he was forcibly removed. The door was locked behind him but he proceeded to pick up a sign and throw it through the window, smashing the glass.

Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client had been going through a stressful period in his life at the time of the incident. This was not helped by the comment about his appearance and was further exasperated when staff allegedly grabbed his testicles when removing him from the pub, causing pain and embarrassment.

Magistrates, who described the incident as a ‘prolonged attack’, revoked an existing community order and resentenced Richard Wetherick to a 12-month community order with 15 rehabilitation days. Wetherick must also pay £85 costs, £336 compensation and a £95 surcharge.

This scum is a danger to society and therefore needs locking up, preferably for a very long time. The more I hear stories like this, the more I feel the judicial system is not doing the job it’s
supposed to, which is to protect the decent people in society. I’m sick of hearing the sob stories of these low lives, making it seemingly ok to do what you like because you’re going through a rough time in life and trying to get let off by pulling out the mental health card. We all have bad times in life but that is not an excuse to go around attacking others and being nothing other than a mindless thug!
