Armed Police officers from Hampshire Constabulary were this afternoon (Thursday) called to attend an incident in Ryde after concerns were raised about the welfare of a woman.
Police were called to Sutton Close in Elmfield after receiving a 999 call shortly after 13:00, the content of which sparked control room operators to deploy authorised firearms officers to the scene in the Great Preston Road area.
Five Police units were witnessed to be parked in Preston Close, including the Armed Response Vehicle (ARV), with another two vehicles on standby in a nearby industrial estate.
It is understood the armed officers deployed to the scene did not need to intervene with the operation.
A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary has this evening confirmed that the force are currently assessing whether the 999 call to police was in fact genuine. This comes less than two weeks after a major search and rescue operation was launched in Ryde, the outcome of which has led Police to investigate whether the alert was a hoax.
Police left the scene at around 14:25.
