ARMED POLICE PRESENCE FORCES MIDDLE ROAD CLOSURE

UPDATED: Middle Road between Carisbrooke and Calbourne was closed for a time earlier this evening (Tuesday) due to a Police incident.

At shortly before 18:00 a number of Police vehicles were seen to be gathering in the car park of The Blacksmith Arms pub near Betty Haunt Lane. Then, unexpectedly, Middle Road was closed with motorists diverted via Shalfleet and Forest Road.

Island Echo has been told a number of Armed officers were present in the area at the time, alongside a local dog unit. It is currently unclear what prompted the closure but it is thought to be related to a potential danger in the area.

2 Armed officers were spotted to be traveling to the Island on board the 17:45 Red Jet from Southampton, although at this stage it is unknown if the transit was related to the incident.

Middle Road has since reopened in both directions and Police have stood down.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed armed officers were deployed to an address near The Blacksmith Arms pub at 16:36 yesterday following concerns for the welfare of an individual.

The incident was not as serious as first thought, allowing armed officers to stand down.
