Firefighters are tackling a chimney fire at a residential address in Newport this evening (Thursday).
2 appliances are on scene at Highfield Road, where flames can be seen coming from the chimney top – sending sparks into the night sky.
It was just before 19:00 that Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to the situation in Barton, only a short distance from Newport Fire Station.
Fire crews are utilising specialist equipment to contain and extinguish the fire.
UPDATE – Chimney rods have been successfully used to bring the incident under control, with an aerial ladder platform elevated to reach the top of the chimney.
A log burner has been removed from the property.
The incident has now been closed.
