The family of Kimberley Cook, a much-loved former model turned paediatric nurse, have paid tribute to her as an inquest into her sudden and unexpected death is opened.
It was over a year ago that the 42-year-old mum-of-two passed away at St Mary’s Hospital, just 2 days after being admitted with stomach pain.
Now, an inquest into her death has finally been opened – and adjourned – by Senior Coroner for the Isle of Wight, Caroline Sumeray.
The decision to open an inquest has been welcomed by Kim’s family, who say they continue tirelessly to advocate for truth and justice, just as Kim once did for so many others who found themselves without a voice.
Last Friday’s inquest opening heard how Kim, who was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, was admitted to hospital on 11th October 2024 with stomach pain. She was diagnosed as having acute pancreatitis.
Sadly, within 2 days, Kim – of Place Side in Cowes – died from multiple organ failure and pancreatitis necrosis. Her official cause of death also recorded chronic alcoholism, something which Kim’s family contests.
In her early career, Kim travelled the world as a successful model. Gracing runways and appearing in countless publications, including Vogue, she made lifelong friends wherever she went.
But following the heartbreaking loss of her niece, Summer, to childhood cancer in 2008, Kim sought to make a difference to others in similar circumstances by retraining as a paediatric nurse, a move which later saw her become the lead nurse for children in care on the Isle of Wight.
Her family have paid tribute saying:
“Kim was the light of our family – warm, creative, and full of compassion.
“Well-known and loved by many on our island, she is mostly remembered for her smile, outrageous laughter, kindness, and her ability to bring people together.
“Kim poured her heart and soul into her work, showing deep dedication for the young people and families she supported.
“An avid fundraiser, Kim participated in countless charity fun runs, gruelling sponsored walks, and every Christmas, she would organise a toy appeal to ensure the children under her care would have a gift to open- a tradition reflective of her love, generosity and unwavering empathy.
“Kim never lost her eye for beauty – from her love of art, antiques and photography, to her natural talents in thrifted fashion and interior design, Kim had the rare ability to recognise and unleash the hidden potential in just about everything, from property, objects, and even people.
“Above all else though, Kim was a dedicated mother to her two sons. As their loudest and proudest cheerleader, her love for them shone through in everything she did.
“As a mother, a daughter, one of seven siblings, and aunt to seventeen, Kim will be remembered with love, pride and admiration, but her loss leaves an immeasurable void that can never be filled”.
please tell me when this lady is going to get the sack she should not still be doing this job she doesn’t fulfil her role it doesn’t want to do her job so why are we still paying for her to do it when she can clearly not and she should be held accountable for making up all these lies about people when they are not true and will never stop until she is MADE TO have some repercussions and do something already
The coroner doesn’t decide on cause she just reports what a hone office pathologist has put before her after an autopsy and tests,and as we as a family know so e tests take 6 months to get a clear result and we also got a 2nd opinion,but she does just report what others have found as parents you might not like what is found out about your child,but sometimes you have to accept others who are trained know what they are talking about I wish this family all the luck in the world but you can only go with what science and medicine tells you sadly
The family consists of medical professionals who have exercised their own clinical judgment. The revelations are deeply disturbing and expose systemic failures among hospital staff, as well as a deliberate attempt by the hospital to conceal the truth
It cannot be right to take over a year to open an inquest. Let us hope that the Coroner gets on with it without further delay. This will have already been very traumatic for the family and it needs to be moved ahead and completed without adding to that delay and trauma.
