Morrisons supermarket team Lake Tigers took on Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service in the Alabaster All Star Game at the Fairway, Sandown last Sunday (15th May).
The Firemen beat Lake 8-1 in front of 100+ crowd, but the result was not all that important to the players and spectators present. The game raised £1,460 for cancer victim Sam Alabaster and his family. Sam has Stage 4 colo-rectal cancer. It is hoped the considerable sum donated can be used to create special memories for Sam, his wife, and 2 young daughters.
The game was organised by Steve Chapman and Paul Westmore. Steve expressed his thanks to Sandown & Lake Youth FC for use of the pitch, Jacqui Middlemass for the tuck shop, Coffee Bubble wagon for refreshments, as well as Sam Kean marketing and Simon Ioannou.

Simon Ioannou is a colleague of Sam at Morrisons Lake. He has set up a fundraising page for Sam Alabaster and another colleague Cheryl Potts, who has also been stricken by cancer.
Simon says:
“Sam and Charmaine are colleagues of mine at Morrisons Lake on the Isle of Wight, going back 15 years. They are happily married and have 2 beautiful girls. Then, in the autumn of 2021, Sam developed acute abdominal pain. After not thinking much of it for a few weeks, he was encouraged to seek medical advice. Sadly, after a series of tests, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.
“At around the same time, another long-term work colleague received some equally sad news. Back in the Summer of 2020, Cheryl Potts was diagnosed with a rare form of Mediastinal Germ Cell cancer. After surgery, chemo, and radiotherapy, along with a lot of love and support, she was able to survive and began rebuilding her life. Then, a few months later, her cancer came back with a vengeance. After more treatment. the doctors sadly came to the conclusion that no more could be done.
“The moral of this story is Cancer sucks! It doesn’t have feelings, morals, and kills indiscriminately.”
Anyone wishing to donate to Sam Alabaster and Cheryl Potts may do so on the following fundraising page.
