UPDATED: A search and rescue operation is underway this afternoon (Wednesday) following what is understood to be the sighting of a kayaker in difficulty at Freshwater Bay.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team are on scene alongside Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue 175 helicopter from Lee-on-Solent.
The search is centered around the Dandelion Cafe area, with the Coastguard helicopter searching the shoreline towards Compton.
UPDATE @ 15:44 – The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have confirmed that they are currently responding to reports from a member of the public about a kayaker potentially in difficulty.
The 999 call was made at just before 14:00.
An extensive search is currently taking place, however nothing untoward has been found. It has been suggested by 1 member of the public that the kayaker may have exited the water safely.
UPDATE @ 17:49 – The search has now been stood down with nothing found.
