Emergency services, including the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, are in attendance at a serious road traffic collision involving a bicycle and a car on a busy crossroad junction in central Ryde tonight (Tuesday).
George Street has been closed at the junction with Cross Street and Melville Street as a result of the crash, which occurred just before 20:28.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is on scene alongside Police, with the rider being tended to by paramedics.
Specialist flying medics have also arrived at the scene amid concerns the cyclist has sustained significant head injuries.
The air ambulance has landed at Simeon Street Recreation Ground.
Island Echo understands the bicycle – thought to be an electric bike – collided into the side of a red Ford Fiesta, which has sustained front end damage.
It appears the rider went over the vehicle and impacted with the windscreen on the opposite side, indicating the severity of the situation.
The young male Fiesta driver has escaped injury, but has been left shaken.
Cordons are in place and are likely to remain so for several hours.
All traffic, including Southern Vectis buses, are being diverted locally until further notice as investigations into the incident get underway.
UPDATE @ 22:47 – The bicycle rider, a young male, has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital under blue lights via land ambulance, accompanied by the air ambulance medics.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has relocated from Simeon Street to the helipad in Newport.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been contacted for a statement, with an update expected on Wednesday morning.
UPDATE @ 23:19 – The casualty has now been airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at Southampton General Hospital, indicating the severity of the injuries sustained.

Certainly looks like it. They should be banned. The company refer to them thus:

Bad enough we should have to suffer the 60 – 80 year old lycra louts riding on pavements, ignoring red lights, 3 abreast on country lanes. Now our roads are to be endangered by kids who can afford one of these things.

It was only a matter of time. These mugs ride these bike at ridiculous speeds with no lights and no thought for anyone on the road
Unfortunately, when you ride round that fast, with no lights, and an attitude like you’re the lord of the manor, threatening people and intimidating them, this is what you end up with. Previous experience of this person tells me that.
Until they either license these bikes or ban them, the roads and pavements will not be safe and serious accidents will happen.

By what definition is he a cyclist? Where are the pedals? Balaclavas and Puffa jackets don’t provide much protection in motorcycle accidents. Hopefully this tragic accident will result in police seizing and destroying all of these dangerous bicycles.
