The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has been scrambled to a serious road traffic collision in the West Wight tonight (Sunday). Emergency services are currently in attendance on Wilmingham Lane, a country lane between Middle Road and Yarmouth Road. Local Police, fire and ambulance crews are being joined by the flying doctors that are inbound from Thruxton, indicating the severity of the incident. The crash – which has involved an unknown number of vehicles – occurred at around 21:30. Island Roads warned earlier this evening of potentially hazard driving conditions overnight with gritters treating the road network from 18:00, and again at 05:00 tomorrow morning. Wilmingham Lane has been closed in both directions by Police. UPDATE @ 21:57 – The air ambulance has been stood down from the incident in the past few minutes, just as the helicopter began to circle overhead to land. The crew are now returning to the air ambulance base near Andover. Wilmingham Lane remains closed in both directions. UPDATE MONDAY – Despite initial fears that serious injuries had been sustained, prompting the deployment of the air ambulance, it has been confirmed that the occupants of a Mini Cooper escaped with minor injuries. The crash occurred on a S-bend. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says it was called to a single vehicle collision at 21:19. The road has since re-opened in both directions.
