A popular late-night takeaway in the heart of Newport has had its plans to stay open even later partially thwarted. Ephesus Pizza and Grill, on the High Street, was seeking permission to stay open until 04:00 on Friday and Saturday, to benefit from the extra business of hungry revellers who leave the nearby bars and clubs at closing time. However, with the concerns of residents and environmental health officers, the Isle of Wight Council’s licensing sub-committee today (Monday) felt extending the opening hours from 01:00 to 02:30 was the only appropriate solution. Speaking at a meeting on Tuesday morning, 2 objectors who live near the grill said they put up with a lot at weekends, hearing shouting, swearing and anti-social behaviour from people who leave the pubs and clubs. They said they moved into their home during the COVID-19 pandemic so had no idea about the nightlife issues at weekends and didn’t want to have more of a problem, with the takeaway opened later., and pleaded for consideration. They said:
“We would just like to sleep at the weekends.”
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary’s licensing officer raised no issues with the 04:00 finish time, subject to conditions. Environmental health officers said if the takeaway is opened until 04:00 people would stay longer in the area and loiter, and they had to balance the night-time economy desires while protecting residents. A compromise of 02:30 was offered as they “didn’t want to make the situation worse.” The takeaway’s owner, Ramazan Kanial, had wanted to keep the licence at 04:00, or was willing to take it down to 03:30, because a 02:30 closure wouldn’t help him to offer food to those leaving the clubs after closing time. Mr Kanial also highlighted other businesses in the area have licences until 04:00, and said they must add to the litter and traffic in the area. The takeaway had agreed to having security in place, a system for entry and exit and a safeguarding policy for the protection of children. The committee, however, decided a 02:30 close was appropriate. Mr Kanial can appeal the committee’s decision within 21 days, if he wishes, to the magistrates’ court.

Don’t like the rules of the uk then sod off back to where you come from
Who cares what you think kev? You are an illiterate limited vocabulary island echo troll. On repeat. Get back in your box , no life c#nt
And there’s the xenophobia this site relies on..
I never desire a late night pizza, but I do often want an early morning pizza, very shameful decision from the Isle of Wight council, extremely disappointed.
All he’s interested in is making money and doesn’t care about the poor local people who have to suffer the noise etc! No way even 2.30am is way too late, lots of very drunk idiots, who don’t actually need food on top of alcohol not a good mix?
Who cleans the mess up the next day???
Who needs to eat a pizza at 4am.?
Nobody.
An absolute joke.
Likely be a zero H&S rating soon and flats within five years anyway
Fed up with vomit and wee in doorways here
People with a life!
I dont understand people who move to a built up town area then moan about noise-perhaps they should buy ear defenders? or ………..just move, deliveries start early morning do they moan about lorries as well? And are they banning seagulls from the roofs until they have slept?
I work nights and 3/4am is my dinner time, something fresh and warm to eat would be amazing from a place like this.
I recently ordered from here and the food was lovely and fresh, the portion could of been a little bigger, but was super tasty.
100% agree. However, I hope you avoided the coleslaw.
We need a 24hour supermarket or something of the like. Like before. Islands a joke everything shut after 10pm even in summer, it’s becoming a ghost rock for the locals.
And what is the deal with closing at 4 pm on Sundays? I know the limit is six hours opening but in most places, some shops open between 12-6 pm or 1-7 pm. Far more convenient. On weekdays, most shops also seem to shut at 4 pm (or even earlier!). Staying open until 6 or 7 pm would be far more useful to those who work and obviously bring in more money for traders.
This is England, not Ibiza, it is becoming more residential as shop close, not for a while, but forever.
So the less time shops open the better for the working people who are keeping over half the night time drunks, drugged, and single muvers, dragging something back to increase the benefits as ‘another’ ‘father unknow’ claim goes in to social security.
‘A safeguarding policy for the protection of children?’ At 4 in the morning? Really?
I once tried to open a chicken shop on the island but I was refused because the name was considered offensive. What is wrong with the name “Big Wight Cock” for a chicken shop?
