A Wootton woman who went around Sainsbury’s with a self-scanner but didn’t actually scan anything she placed in her basket, has been fined £80.
Leanne Harris, 41, of Church Road in Wootton pleaded guilty to theft from a shop when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (17th October).
Prosecuting, Ann Smout, told the court that on the evening of 28th August at around 17:00, Harris entered the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Newport and picked up a self-scanner.
The 41-year-old then proceeded to go around the store placing various items into her basket before leaving the store, making no attempts to pay for the goods.
She was challenged by a senior member of staff outside the store where she was told she needed to pay for the items.
Harris didn’t pay for the goods and they were recovered. All items – worth around £120.26 – were still in good enough condition to be placed back on the shelf.
Defending, Barry Arnett, said that his client had recently left her employment as a result of a dispute and was awaiting money that she thought she was owed that in fact never turned up. He also added that the 41-year-old admitted that stealing the goods from Sainsbury’s on that day, wasn’t the correct decision.
Harris was in court back in January 2020 for 2x shoplifting offences.
Magistrates handed the 41-year-old an £80 fine. She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £32 surcharge fee.

I wonder how many times she’s got away with it?

no sh%t sherlock
I must say I am against shoplifting, but who’s not been overcharged
by Supermarkets over the years.
Also over the last couple of years with inflation at just over 10%
why have many supermarkets been charging customers
over 100% extra on some items.
Irrelevant. Stealing is stealing. And wrong.
So why are supermarkets charging us so much more than inflation ????
If you get the chance, take the house. They’ve been taking us for long enough.
£197, same as breaking the requirements of the sex offenders registry, hmm
Leaves her job, thinks it’s ok to just help herself. Stealing it using Smartshop at Sainsburys also shows that this was pre-planned. What an idiot.
