Islanders are being invited to have their say on the Island’s planning blueprint, on the same day that Labour has announced intentions to impose mandatory housing targets for local authorities. The Island Planning Strategy (IPS) is a crucial council planning document which sets out the overall approach towards future development on the Island and the policies to be used in assessing planning applications. The long overdue strategy outlines council policies on key issues like future housing needs, affordable homes, associated infrastructure and how sustainable developments will help the Island drive towards its net zero carbon ambitions. The plan balances social, economic and environmental issues as required by current national planning policy and fronts up to some difficult decisions such as planning for 453 homes per year until 2037 — although 2,358 of these homes across 44 different sites already have planning permission. But the new Government has revealed plans to reintroduce compulsory housing targets with an aim of building 1.5million new homes in the next 5 years, which could mean a lot more than 453 homes a year for the Isle of Wight… A 6-week period for public representation on the IPS starts today (Monday) and runs until midnight on Monday 19th August. This is an opportunity for anyone to make comments on the soundness of the IPS and suggest any changes they think are necessary. All duly made comments received are then submitted to the Secretary of State together with the IPS and the evidence base for an independent planning inspector to review and carry out a public examination. Councillor Paul Fuller, Cabinet member for planning and housing, said: “Publishing the IPS is the next big step forward in the process and offers anyone an opportunity to comment, either in support or objection, to the content of the plan and if they are objecting, to set out why and what changes should be made.
“All of those comments will then be reviewed by an independent planning inspector at the next stage of the process. I would encourage all stakeholders and the community to get involved in this important stage. “We know that it is likely that there will be changes nationally and we are continually watching that space to see what happens, and what any changes might mean for us. “It was, however, important that we still publish our plan and begin the formal stages, which may help our position down the line.”

Seems to be a bit pointless consulting on this yet or even now.
Already over 5 years worth of the IWC’s yearly number of new builds already given Planning permission and very soon going to be told what you have to build, so the IWC have missed the boat, wasted numerous year and lord knows how much money.
Also, why don’t the IWC build their own homes on the land they already own at the Maresfield East Cowes site and South Street Newport instead of giving them to profit making Housing Associations, or selling the sites off at a silly price. No need to buy Industrial Units that don’t realise their expected returns….. time for proper council housing, owned by IWC. Just an observation, I do not need one.
Now, the number of illegals arriving into the UK is no longer being published by HMG. For they are the reason for the massive amount of building needed.
So when our beautiful country is built to ruination to house displaced local people from the mainland or with migrants themselves, all you naive fools who never voted Reform, I hope it effects you mostly.

One question . Has all this work been for nothing now Labour want to build on green (grey) land. ? IE green land that is not attractive, Scary.
Time will tell, the IWC can put forward what house numbers they like, but they have already used 5 years of their stated number, before it’s even consulted on with already permitted planning numbers.
Plus nobody knows what figure the government number will be. It may be a similar number or it could be 2, 3 or more times and I bet if targets are missed some sort of punitive penalty will be in place.

With hundreds arriving daily, it is clear to all but idiots that acres of green field sites would have to be concreted over, not for a while, but, for the rest of eternity to house them, and their numerous, and often troublesome crime ridden offspring, which as soon as the ever filled womb is emptied here, will then be ‘classed’ as British and the whole lot know that they are here for their good but at our, and our countryside’s deep cost.

backlog( to clear the stats) but the next 2-3 years will be the worst….. the pendulum has swung so far to the left….it will hopefully will go back to the fold of common sense, British values and not a Blairist puppet like the Jimmy Saville defending puppet Starmer..that seems to have replaced the last Etonian embarrassment to the English people… the people (hopefully what`s left of the white, English, 4th/ 5th generation British) to be clear.Despite all the wasted complusory buying of homes for the inappropriate HS2 now appaently becoming free
As hundreds of boat come illegally each day, with many more illegals hidden in lorries cars etc, then of course filling your land up with dirt poor people who never come with a piece of land, OR the money to pay for a tent let alone a home, means we will not only be paying for those we never wanted here, but then having another swathe of our country build on to shoe horn these freeloading spongers, thus ruining our countryside and paying for it too.
You had your last chance to change it, but instead choose to encourage even more here.

revenue raised from that pays for the Camera’s
Personally I would also charge motorists islandwide permit parking
that too would help raise revenue.

What a CV waste of tax payers money now,in few months planning laws will relax, people will have more permitted development rights, builders can build at last on wasted so called to green land. Homeless can be housed and people will be able to buy their first home. Wind farms will at last be cc allowed to reduce reliance on imported electric.

I just wanted to say how desperately islanders need homes but now I have to be rude about the ignorance of poorly educated racists and their poor attitude. I have no doubt that amongst those arriving on boats there are a few rogues but have to hope the vast majority will simply work and contribute to London society. Let’s face it, most are heading to cities rather than the island. Many of them might be holidaying here in the next decade and retiring here in 40/50 year’s time.

The Island Planning Strategy is only good for wiping your arse on because the new government will be making big changes. However, it doesn’t matter because our utterly useless council will take five years to write a new strategy by which time they will probably have to write another. Sack the lot of them.
