A 5-hour standoff between Armed Police and a teenager holed up in an East Cowes flat was brought to a safe conclusion last night (Monday) when the individual handed over a number of weapons, including a firearm and a knife.
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services descended on York Avenue at around 18:00 in response to concerns for the welfare of a 16-year-old boy.
Cordons were soon erected in the area as armed officers took up position; guns and riot shields at the ready. Local businesses were forced to close and a number of residents found themselves wandering the streets unable to go home.
Additional resources were called in from the mainland, arriving at Ryde Pier by a MOD launch by 19:00. It is thought a negotiator was also rushed across the Solent in a bid to cool the situation.
Following several hours of talks, the incident was brought to an end shortly before 22:45 after Police convinced the teenager to throw a number of weapons out of the window, allowing officers to move in and make an arrest.
A team of riot gear-clad officers made their move and stormed the flat, dragging a male out in cuffs.
Police have confirmed that a number of weapons were involved in the incident, including an air gun and a knife.
Island Echo has obtained photographs showing the moment that what appears to be a pistol and a rifle-type gun were shown to officers.
As a result of the siege, a 16-year-old boy from East Cowes has been arrested on suspicion of threats to kill.
He remains in police custody at the current time.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has this morning (Tuesday) said:
“We were called at 5.50pm yesterday evening (Monday 28 August) to a report of the concern for the welfare of a 16-year-old boy at an address on York Avenue, East Cowes.
“Officers attended and various weapons, including a knife and an air gun, were seen.
“Specialist officers were deployed to the location to ensure the safety of the boy, officers and members of the public.

That’ll keep social services busy. New PlayStation, trainers and a nice long holiday for good behaviour.
You’ve obviously had no dealings with the dysfunctional children services on the island then
Your supposition is wrong. But I know they spend huge amounts of taxpayers money, pandering to the game players.
Not just here, but all over the country.
Wonder if the parents know of this boys dangerous toys. Appreciating you cant watch them all the time surely the occasional room inspection would’ve uncovered such items and no this would not be an invasion of the childs’ privacy because if there is trust you would not need to do this in the first place. I expect social media has had a hand in this as usual, prodding along an already unbalanced person.
Should be tattooed on the forehead with some stamp to say he’s a wannabe ganster…..16 bet we can all guess who this is. He’ll get away with it like snake JHughes
You should have been more specific about what you’re trying for and what you’re looking to accomplish in your life than what you’re looking at right here on your own planet or on a computer with the right kind or whatever the word you need for that particular thing that is not in the picture but you have a lot of options and I think you should have some of the things in that you have that are not the right size but you have to have the size and size that they need so if you’re going with that you’re not sure you can do the same size and then the same thing either you could be more like the same shape that would make you more like you would like the same type or the size that would make your hair like a different shape
A certain lack of grammar here methinks.
Ern
Not just a lack of grammar mate,
WTF
Drunk/drugged in charge of a keyboard Kev!
Some troll. Will say the same gibberish under a different name soon
The result of no discipline in schools and lack of corporal punishmnet = total disrespect for authority and living in a state of ‘they can’t touch me’..He knows nothing will come of it as do many others. Bring back borstal. Instruct magistrates to get tough and ignore any pleas from the little darlings that would never do anything wrong…
That’s right – as soon as the minority pop up being stupid we must beat our kids again. Perfect solution.
Don’t get me wrong, there is little deterrent these days, but not sure corporal punishment is the way to go.
Birch him and find out.
I wonder how much this cost the tax payer to pander to a hopeless wannabe, if he had been shot dead for waving round a air pistol just think what negative press the police would have got for just doing their job.
Heaven knows what the magistrate will say / do. But I would guess he’ll be back swaggering along the streets before long .
At least he wouldn’t offend again…Tough.
Why no tanks and/or fighter aircraft circling overhead? Dozens of armed police, elite squads rushed over from the mainland, were surely not enough to supress a fantasist teenager in his own flat.
Agree. Seems a bit OTT. This idiot wants to be a ‘gangsta’. Fool.
He must be suffering with mental health problems.
Why can’t he just be a little s–t, there are many of them wandering the island
He is and all of these comments which i am reading are neither accurate or truthful. People should keep their thoughts to theirselves before judging
Bloody stupid. Who does he think he is. Need to come down hard on this sort of crime. I bet he loved having all that attention for 5 hours. Something to boast about to his mates.
Is there no compassion left in this world? 16 year olds can/do have serious Mental Health issues, which some of you seem to have ignored….
But crack on with your insensitive and judgemental comments. It must be exhausting being so perfect….
Thank you for this. People need to have more compassion before judging and commenting on things they have no idea about
The British have had too much compassion for every hard luck story every weirdo every nut job and now not only our own but the worlds too.
We are sick of it and as the cost be it monetary or having our lives ruined by all these nere do wells the patience and welcome mat has completely worn out for all but the naive and families of the takers in society
You pay all the costs for such wasters see how much you care then
Agreed these kids have lived through covid and total isolation for years. Anxiety and depression among our children is at an all time high. As is suicide.
He’s now grounded with no supper for a week.
Absolutely none of you know the circumstances, I question why the poor boy is bent over when being escorted by two officers…… My thoughts are with him and I hope he is getting all the support he needs
Bloody do gooders again ”because of his age” bullshit These little feril brats are watching too much Yank crap tv. All mouth and guns then they think they have to do it to impress their low life mates.
Name calling is so infantile. Grow up
Another wanna be Island gangster in the making. His parents must be so proud of his behaviour. The Island is full of them ,a nice stint in the army would sort them out .
What an idilic place to visit .
Who is this arse*ole? A wanna be gangsta? He’s been watching way too many YouTube and TikTok videos. Kids of day are so easily corrupted by violent content online.
Horrified at some of the comments on this incident. The boy is 16 years old unless you personally know him it would be better to keep some of the cutting comments to yourself.
Every time that I read about a report like this, the more it reaffirms my belief that the police in the UK are adopting the format of the police forces in the USA. In that, the response is entirely blown out of all proportions.
We have all seen it, American documentaries of police and media footage, I can’t help laughing at the police response, dozens of police vehicles pulling up from all directions, sirens blazing, cops and sniper units armed to the teeth and God help anyone who is actually stupid enough to fire a shot, because there will be hundreds of rounds fired back at the perpetrator. Im not saying that there should not be armed responses and in mass shooting events yes such a response is needed, but not to every response.
Totally agree. The boy is desperate for help. And there is none.
