Armed Police have taken up position outside an address in East Cowes where a standoff is ongoing this evening (Monday).
Police descended on the North Wight town at around 18:00, speeding toward the bottom end of York Avenue.
A number of cordons have been erected in the area as Armed Police point guns at a property behind the safety of a patrol car, shouting loudly in the direction of a flat above a commercial premises.
Island Echo understands that a male has barricaded himself in a building and is making no attempts to leave the property peacefully. Police officers are waiting for the correct time to enter the address – however long it may take.
Around 10 units from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are on the scene alongside numerous resources from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, including an Operational Commander.
The road is blocked by the junctions with Ferry Road, Link Road, Clarence Road and Castle Street.
Locals and residents who live within the cordon are being told that they are not able to get to their homes or vehicles at this time. Some people are missing the ferry as a result of their vehicles being stuck inside the inner cordon.
As a result of the closure vehicles are currently unable to access the Red Funnel terminal by its usual route, whilst the Co-operative store – which sits in the middle of the cordon – has been closed.
UPDATE @ 19:10 – More Armed Police have arrived on scene but, despite their presence, there is still no sign that officers are going to force entry to the property at this moment in time.
Negotiators continue in their attempts to de-escalate the situation.
UPDATE @ 21:00 – After almost 3 hours, the incident continues.
The occupant of the property is still refusing to come out but it appears progress is being made. Island Echo has been told that several items, including a firearm and a knife, were thrown from the property earlier in the negotiations.
Police have not yet made any moves to secure the property.
It is understood that further resources from the mainland are being drafted in.
UPDATE @ 22:30 – After deliberations and conversation with the occupant of the property through an open upstairs window, Armed Officers equipped with riot shields have entered the property and forcibly removed at least 1 person.
After more than 4 hours, all present emergency service personnel are beginning to stand down.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary is expected to release a statement on Tuesday morning.

What a waste of resources, ambulances and paramedics and not anyone as yet needing help while those with life threatening need are left for hours waiting for Ambulance. Also all those police unit’s (10) sat there allowing other crimes to be committed around Island and get away.
I guess you can always join the police force and start drafting plans of emergency response for various situations with your vast expertise!

Sanguinius and I were going on vacation in September but it is still in September I believe and it was in October so we were just trying not sure what the weather is going on there is no way to go to that time but I think it’s a little bit warmer than it was in the past but it was still a little bit warm in October but it’s not as cold in October and it is a bit cold and I feel pretty hot so we have been having the heat in October but we haven’t had the humidity and it has gotten much heat so it’s still hot so it’s just not a big storm but we haven’t gotten a chance and I have to be in my room and I’m going out of my house so I’m just not feeling good so I don’t feel good so I think I am just a little bit of heat

I live in East Cowes. It’s got its problems, but no worse than anywhere else.
East Cowes is great compared to a lot of the island. Ryde is a dump full of aggressive chavs and Ventnor seems to be filled with meth-heads.

Fagan S-T, when the tear gas canister goes in, will it just affect the person the police are after or the hostages/family/children or whoever and whatever else is in there? This probably isn’t a situation where everyone in there is an adverse combatant. The police are probably acting on how much.or how little they know rather than what we can guess or make up.

Because the situation may have been more complex. Shoot first and then realise that the person was struggling after being failed by support services. Decades of Governmental cuts haven’t helped.
