The second of the Winter time trial series was staged in the relatively calm water of the River Medina on Saturday.
The event was expanded with Southsea Rowing Club making the short trip across the Solent to join the Island-based rowing clubs of Newport, Ryde and Shanklin.
Over 40 crews took part in the event, held over 2 divisions. Once again this provided inclusive competition for the 11 to 78-year-old age range and across all types of boat, i.e single sculls, doubles and coxed quads. Invaluable race experience was gained by the rowers taking part.
The fastest time of the day was recorded by Joel and Austin Smith of Ryde, in the double sculls event, in just under 7mins 50 secs, whilst in the fastest single sculls of the day were Guy Elder of Southsea Rowing club and in the equivalent ladies event, a welcome return for Daisy Faithfull of Shanklin, saw her claim the quickest time.
Traditionally the fastest boat of them all, the quadruple scull, saw Ryde’s Novice men narrowly beat the Shanklin Mixed quad, ahead of 4 other crews. Chris Mullen of Newport RC once again contested the Masters event and improved his performance by over 20 seconds from his previous race.
The next and final event of the series takes place on Saturday 5th February.
