The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 on the Isle of Wight has increased by 4, according to Public Health England.
Today’s (Sunday’s) data shows an increase of 4 cases of coronavirus from 123 cases yesterday to 127 today.
The recent increase may be as a result of extra testing on the Island with the establishment of a mobile testing facility in Newport. Anyone testing positive at these stations are not poorly enough to be in hospital, but are showing symptoms of the virus.
The Island still has one of the lowest number of cases in the country and has a lot less than the island of Jersey. It comes just says before a new track and trace app will be trialed on the Isle of Wight by HM Government.
NHS England report that there have now been 28 coronavirus deaths in hospital, with the Office for National Statistics confirming 3 people have also died in the community – 2 in care homes and 1 at home – as of 17th April.
The latest information from the Isle of Wight NHS Trust confirms 22 people have recovered from COVID-19 and have been discharged from hospital. This number is expected to be updated in due course when the Trust issue their latest statement on recent deaths.
The total number of confirmed active cases on the Isle of Wight is 77 – the highest it has been – but the true number could be slightly less, depending on the number of hospital recoveries.

Soooo we sadly have more cases and more deaths….and some bright spark wants to take us out of lock down and use us as human lab rats…I was no bright spark in school but even I can see that the numbers are still rising and when they bring us of lock down our numbers will keep on rising and the deaths will keep on coming
Totally agree Nige. Some people are getting nasty and shitty saying this phone app is a good thing and we should all participate and we are stupid if we dont. I am a key worker and I am concerned if social restrictions are lifted and people pour out of lockdown the virus could possibly run riot and we will see many more people infected, and God knows hopefully no more deaths just so the government can experiment with this Track & Trace phone app
Don’t forget more are being tested here so this was bound to happen. Better we know I suppose.
I can’t see many people downloading this app as we have a lot of people especially the elderly who wouldn’t know what an I phone was, never mind using it
Everything is in place now for us to drop like flies and not cause to much of a problem to the NHS .
Couldn’t agree more about us being used as lab rats
Careful with the generalisation. My parents are in their late 70s. Both have smart phones and use their laptops a lot. Very clued up on how to be safe on the internet. Used youTube a lot too. And they say a lot of their friends are the same.
Lock down must remain for min of another month to decrease new cases
I do not understand a lot of the comments relating to this particular article and others similar.
We are not ‘Lab Rats’, this is a trial of an App, we are not being taken out of lockdown, lockdown will, when certain criteria have been met, be eased and will be a gradual process perhaps geographically with the IOW one of the first with gradual easing.
Unbelievably six Covidiot drunken idiots were loudly enjoying the evening for nearly an hour outside the Railway Medina Tavern at 10 tonight (Sun). The Landlord called police as did local residents in the OAP St Cross Court opposite. Outrageous behaviour in a National Emergency to waste police time by having to attend and move them on. Don’t they have families they care about? Heaven help us.
While the ryde /shanklin/ sandown scum are not staying in abide in the rules disease will spread police need to be more tougher with the law STAY IN IDIOTS
Great idea testing the new app on the Island especially when so many people are now carrying on as normal..
You get the few complaining at privacy which is pathetic especially when you see the agony and fear people
go through with the virus in there final minutes.
Although I expect the number to really be higher even over estimating it by 10 the Island is still doing a lot better than the mainland. Although some are still being silly most are doing what is needed to keep the key workers safe and keeping new cases to a minimum. And it is this that makes me wonder if the app being tested here is a good idea. Would it not be better to test the app in a place where cases are high and people not doing what they are told, like London?
BTW The island is used a lot to test technology out because of it’s status as an island with a good population size. It’s like a little Britten. This makes it a perfect testing ground. And we benefit, we’re one of the first to get gigabit broadband way before a lot in the world!
I will be using the app.
We are back to work today , I’m not certain it’s safe but have no choice as dont wanna lose my job!
@steven – all the key workers have been slogging away non stop since this started – stop worrying and crack on.
How many will come to the lsland now the word is out about our low numbers of the virus…
Will the ferry service allow this.
And what will result be from that ?
I tested positive, I work in a nursing home.
Easing lockdown is TOTALLY THE WRONG THING TO DO!
