The number of people dying in care homes from coronavirus on the Isle of Wight has continued to rise.
According to data released by the Office for National Statistics today (Tuesday), 39 people have now died of COVID-19 in Isle of Wight care homes — a rise of 4 – in the period to 5th June.
The total number of coronavirus deaths in the community – including in the hospice, at home, and in care homes – stands at 43 people.
A further 39 people have died at St Mary’s Hospital, bringing the Island’s total death toll to 82.
The number of coronavirus cases on the Island, as of yesterday (Monday 15th June) was 202. Only 3 new positive cases of coronavirus have been confirmed on the Isle of Wight since the start of June, when the number stood at 199.
Latest figures from the Isle of Wight NHS Trust show 47 people have recovered from the virus.
The Island is still asked to remain vigilant with social distancing measures introduced on high streets in Cowes, Newport and Ryde and facial coverings needed to be worn on public transport and at the hospital unless you have a reason to be exempt.

All very well to say how many died in care homes, but which ones. Why are they hiding the evidence?
I’d like to know too, especially as I have a relative in one.
The only people that need to know what homes it’s in are the familys of patients that live at those care homes
It’s embarrassing how stupid some people are – no wonder people refer to ‘Island mentality.’
Number 9 bus today. Newport to Ryde. Three persons allowed to ride without masks. Return was good except people removing masks in transit. Mixed ages.
I give up.
Sorry Suzie what people say about wether the virus is here or not it’s an irrelevant post . You should be posting why in hell are care homes are getting the virus in the first place. It’s supposed to be a safe place for our older generation. An in depth investigation should be put in place now. God help them.
To the editor personally. No point in posting anymore. I’ve had 3 different posts on 3 different subjects blanked out and not submitted. Nothing wrong with them but obviously not in your liking. A total biased view and biased censorship on your behalf. If this is this how Isle of Wight Echo works then shove it.
82 deaths out of 202 cases seems to me to be an incredibly high mortality rate. I know there’s a big percentage of elderly on the island but a 40-45% death rate?? That seems like the island mp should be acting on something this serious doesn’t it? Also why aren’t the echo and other local press making more of this situation?? Other areas of the country haven’t got that high of a mortality rate.
Because they want the island opened up at our expense to suit the hotel and b&b industry this is why we can’t get an honest answer, they want to flood the island with holiday makers and second homers, hush it up, your all guilty let’s just hide it all
I see there is yet another person hiding behind a false name taking nonsense, the Clovid 19 virus is very real ask the families of the 82 people who have died on the Island. Grow up and start acting responsibly
Dodgy Joe…extreme narcissist
Actually don’t wake up, do your own thing. I will be carrying on as normal, going out every day on the beach. I welcome meeting the smart people who are out.
Idiot
Are you a complete idiot?
Bye Joe
Looking at this mathematically, the numbers suggest that
a The death rate for Covid patients on the Island far exceeds that in the rest of the country – and also in the rest of the world too. This seems unlikely.
b The number of cases is much lower than it should be because not enough people have been tested. This makes sense because testing wasn’t widely available on the Island in the early weeks of the epidemic.
c The number of deaths is higher than it should be because deaths are being counted as Covid deaths without the patients having tested positive for the disease.
I suspect that both b and c are true. If so, we are comparing the number of deaths of suspected cases with the numbers of confirmed cases which is not comparing like with like.
No. 8 bus from Sandown Zoo to Newport carried three young men without masks. Is this not mandatory? Is the driver allowing them to flaunt the rule?
