37 teams, a large number of whom had made the early morning Solent crossing, took part in one of Shanklin & Sandown’s biggest annual events on Saturday 11th September.
The well attended and richly rewarded Am-Am, saw the teams battling for the winning honour as well as vying for prizes for nearest the pin on all par 3s, nearest the line on the 8th fairway and picking up spot prizes on pre-designated holes, none of which were known to the players.
The 9th Hole Challenge, organised by Club Professional, Peter Hammond is a much-enjoyed add-on to the competition, which sees competitors deposit anything from £5 to £50 in the Pro-Shop and, if they can hit the green and sink their ball in 3, then Peter will double their money. A win-win as, should a player fail to make a 3, then their initial deposit sits in the Pro-Shop ready for that player to spend when needed.
A 2-course meal followed the competition, prepared by Club caterer, Helen Broadhead.
The winning team were Shanklin & Sandown members comprising Chris Ridett, Adam Ridett, Luke Menniss and Tim Exell. Runners up were John Pitchers, Jason Toovey, Lance Ayres and Neil Henderson from Blackmoor GC and Meon Valley GC.
