A total of 37 teams, several of whom had made the early morning Solent crossing, took part in one of Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club’s biggest annual events last Saturday (18th May). The well-attended and richly rewarded Am-Am, saw teams battling for the winning honour as well as vying for prizes, including the straightest drive on the 8th and nearest the pin on all par 3s. The 9th Hole Challenge, organised by Club Professional, Peter Hammond is a much-enjoyed add-on to the competition, which sees competitors deposit anything between £5 and £50 in the Pro-Shop in the hope that they hit the green and par the hole. If they do Peter doubles their deposit. A win-win as, should a player fail to make a 3, their deposit sits in their Pro-Shop account until they are ready to spend it. A 2-course meal followed the competition, prepared by Club Chef, Liam Hill. The winners, scoring 127, were a combination of players from Ilford, Brentwood and Shanklin & Sandown, comprising Neil Glover, James Osman, Luke Menniss and Shaun Mallon, each winning a Powakaddy Cube Micra Push Cart. The runners-up, scoring 126, were the home team of Adam Barsdell, Paul Gardner, James Fleming and Thomas Roberts, each winning a Galvin Green Daxton Half Zip Top.
