On this day 30 years ago, Newport IW reached the first round of the FA Cup by beating Bashley in the New Forest.
Port had drawn 1-1 against Bashley the previous Saturday at St George’s Park, with Stuart Richie netting for Newport from the penalty spot.
The following Tuesday – 24th October 1995 – Richie scored the winning goal seconds before the final whistle with a curling strike to ensure his side reached the first round proper.
Eurshell Fearon had given Port the the lead in the 5th minute, following which Bashley equalised. Graeme Gee then put Port into the lead for the 2nd time in the game in the 83rd minute, only for the New Forest side to level the scores for a second time in the 85th.
Newport finished the game winning 2-3 in what was described as ‘atrocious’ conditions. Sadly, they lost 2-1 at Enfield in the following round after drawing the home fixture 1-1.
This was the 2nd time in 2 years that the Isle of Wight’s County Town club had reached the 1st round of the FA Cup. The previous season they had been knocked out by Aylesbury at St George’s Park, losing 2-3 on a quagmire of a pitch.
The furthest Newport reached in the FA Cup was the 2nd round in 1935/36 and again in 1945/46.
