Work to improve a large section of the main road through Binstead will get underway next week, bringing about significant traffic disruption.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Island Roads is planning to improve major sections of Binstead Road between Ringwood Road and Gwydyr Close from Monday (5th January).
The work will be split into 2 phases in order to allow for other work planned on the network, notably Southern Water works at Elenors Grove, which are scheduled for 2nd February to 10th April.
Phase 1 to improve the section between Ringwood Road and Stonepitts Close is programmed to take place until Friday 30th January. The second phase between Stonepitts Close and Gwydyr Road is scheduled to begin on 13th April and last until 24th April.
These dates can change due to adverse weather, shallow services and unknown ground conditions.
The project involves deeper than usual excavations to address the underlying conditions that have seen the highway deteriorate in this location. This means that full 24-hour road closures will be required for the duration of work. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and the road will be re-opened between phases.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“Road users know that this work is required and by strengthening the road’s foundations we hope to reduce the need for future maintenance on this very busy section.
“Unfortunately, this type of work cannot be done without causing some disruption and we would like to thank road users and the local community in advance for their understanding, particularly so as there will be a lot of disruption elsewhere on the network in the first part of 2026 with major utility work also programmed.”
The official diversion during the project will be signed and is via Station Road, Briddlesford Road, Mersley Road, Mersley Down Road, Brading Down Road, New Road, Brading High Street, Rowborough Lane, Beaper Shute, Brading Road, and Marlborough Road – although local traffic is expected to use the residential streets of Binstead estate.

Any news on what bus services there will be for Binstead to Newport and Ryde etc?
I don’t suppose anyone has thought of that
All you have to do is go onto the Southern Vectis website and under their normal “Service Updates” page, they clearly show the diversion routes for bus routes 9 and 4 to and from Ryde.
The A3054, Binstead road, Kite hill and Elenors grove have been more akin to a building site over the last 2 years.
Repairs on Kite hill appears finished for the last 4 days, apart from the road surface being completed.?
Aside from the work mentioned in the article. It will be swiftly followed by
SGN with 10 weeks of delays on Binstead road. The council show no concerns with the chaos these island wide delays cause though.
The future plan is to get vehicles off the roads,
Brilliant. Absolutely bloody fantastic. Got my husband’s funeral Monday. People from mainland coming who have no knowledge of the roads .
They couldn’t have planned it better . Thanks island roads .
Island Roads couldn’t organise a p*ss up in a brewery.
Sorry to hear of your loss.
