Motorists in Ryde face 2 weeks of travel disruption from today (Monday) as Smallbrook Lane has been closed in both directions for the second phase of utility works as part of the wider roundabout improvement scheme.
The busy road to the south of Ryde is already closed to traffic heading west from Westridge until April next year. This is to allow the complete overhaul of Smallbrook Roundabout over a 6 month period.
Earlier this month the road was completely closed for a week to allow utility companies to move underground pipes and cables. Now, the road has been closed in its entirety once again but this time for a 2-week period. This is to allow further utility works by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, SGN and Southern Water.
The road is expected to re-open for those heading east from Smallbrook to Westridge by Monday 6th December. The road will remain one-way only until April, when it will re-open with a lower 30mph speed limit.
Motorists will have to divert via Green Lane to Brading, or via St John’s Road in Ryde, to bypass the closure. This is likely to add to the traffic building in the St John’s area.
A digger, chainsaw, dozen lorrys of readymix and a a gallon of white paint could have done the lot in a week for a under £5k.

The Council need to come clean on this and tell us why this mini roundabout needs a ‘major improvement’ including rerouting gas, electricity and water mains. After all, weren’t we promised a ‘new broom’ approach only a short while ago?
If nothing else, it would go some way to dispelling the idea that this is all in aid of huge, new housing estates in the area. Unless that is the real reason, of course.
Should Have Put Traffic Lights there to stop accidents instead of this kind of thingy they are doing right now which will not help those who never stop for roundabouts or fail to look properly.
