18-year-old Cameron Younie from Ryde has been handed a 12-month driving ban after admitting to driving with cannabis in his system.
Younie, of Westfield Park, appeared for sentencing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday, after previously pleading guilty to 2 charges; drug driving and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, detailed to the court that at 13:35 on 9th July, Police recognised Younie behind the wheel of a car travelling on York Avenue in East Cowes. The vehicle was pulled over on Connaught Road and a drugs wipe was conducted, which provided a positive indication for cannabis.
After being arrested and taken into custody blood samples were taken, which later proved Younie to be over the prescribed limit of 2 – a level of 2.2u/g was recorded.
Ms Miller fast-forwarded to clock 3 months to 22:50 on 20th October last year, when Police stopped a vehicle on the A3054 in Newport. Officers found Younie in possession of 2 small plastic bags containing cannabis., which he admitted was for personal use.
Defending, Mr McGoldrick explained to the court that his client struggles with sleep and was taking medication, but that made him feel groggy the next morning. As an alternative, he started smoking a spliff before bed to help him sleep.
Mr McGoldrick made clear to the bench that there was no suggestion of being unfit to drive and said that there was nothing aggravating in this case. He stated that Younie had been pulled over by the Police around 20 times in a 12-month period.
Addressing the defendant, Magistrates said:
“If you carry on smoking you probably won’t get your licence back and if you do, you will lose it again. It was a stupid sequence of events”.
Unemployed Camera Younie was handed a 12-month driving ban, fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs wth a £48 surcharge.

How do you get stopped 20 times in a year?. I’ve been stopped 3 times in 42yrs and no fault found each time.
U goodie goodie two shoes
Stopped 20 times in 12 months ?
Sounds to me like Police Victimisation !
Disgracefull.
Sounds terribly unlucky
He is already on a downward slope.
I would like to know the accident figures caused by drivers with THC in their system.
I have grave doubts that they are anywhere near the same as drink driving.
