UPDATED: A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences after stealing a car – thought to belong to the his mother – in Ryde last night (Tuesday).
The Vauxhall Mokka was stolen from Ryde High Street before being abandoned on Carters Road near Haylands at around 23:30. Island Echo understands the vehicle has sustained substantial damage as a result.
A local dog unit was called in to track and locate the driver of the vehicle, with the Island’s Roads Policing officers moving in to make the arrest.
The boy has been questioned at Newport Police Station today.
Police are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Anyone who saw the vehicle should call Police on 101, quoting 44170204677.
UPDATE THURSDAY – The 16-year-old teenager has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking; driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence; drink driving; driving without insurance; assault and assaulting a constable in the execution of their duty.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is to appear at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court in Newport today.
