Significant improvement works on the main road through Wroxall will begin today (Monday), bringing about 15 weeks of disruption.
The project to resurface the road connecting Whitely Bank to Ventnor will be delivered in 7 phases, starting with a 350m section of Clarence Road between Mountfield Road and Manor Road.
Each phase will involve deeper-than-usual excavations to strengthen the road’s foundations before resurfacing. While this will reduce future maintenance needs, it does require full road closures.
The project is scheduled to finish by 27th February, with a 2-week break over Christmas and New Year. However, the timeline may change due to winter weather conditions, unexpected ground issues, or unmapped utility services even though thorough site surveys have already been carried out.
Ahead of the works, Island Roads has distributed around 1,450 letters to residents outlining the project and its impact.
Parking restrictions in Wroxall will be relaxed during the works, following discussions with the Isle of Wight Council. However, vehicles must still be parked safely to avoid obstructing access for residents and road users. Failure to do this could result in enforcement action.
Furthermore, the council will not be enforcing the 24-hour maximum stay restriction in St Martin’s Road Car Park. Please note that if you are using the disabled bays, then you must display a valid blue badge.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“Everyone agrees this section of road urgently needs improvement, but unfortunately, the necessary remedial work cannot be carried out without some local disruption.
“To minimise inconvenience, we’ve split the project into seven phases and scheduled it outside the busier summer months.
“We’re also committed to keeping residents informed throughout the process and would like to sincerely thank the local community for its cooperation and understanding so far.”
As the work will clearly affect local bus services, Island Roads, the Isle of Wight Council and Southern Vectis are all currently exploring options to maintain connectivity and all parties hope to make an announcement shortly.
