More than 1,200 properties across 127 postcodes in the South Wight have been hit by a power cut this morning (Wednesday). Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks are aware of a fault in the Whitwell, Niton, Chale and Atherfield areas – affecting the PO38 postcode. Power was lost at 08:56 and it is currently estimated that supplies will be restored by 11:00 this morning. It is thought that the outage may be connected to a fallen tree that landed on a telegraph pole in the vicinity of Southford Lane, Whitwell. 2 fire appliances from Newport and Shanklin were mobilised to the scene just 3 minutes prior to the power outage being recorded by SSEN. UPDATE @ 14:38 – Power is now being restored to affected properties, which have been without supply for more than 5-and-a-half hours. SSEN says that power should be back on for customers by 15:00.
