A Freshwater man who was stopped by Police for having a bald tyre was also found to be drug driving at the time a court has heard. Mitchell Dent, 23, of Dall Square in Freshwater, pleaded guilty to drug driving and using a passenger vehicle with tyres of insufficient tread when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday 9th January). Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court that on the 4th August 2023, Police stopped Dent – driving his Peugeot 207 – on Hunnhyill after they noticed that one of his tyres was bald. At the roadside, a drugs wipe was conducted which returned a positive reading for THC – a cannabis derivative. Having been taken to Newport Police Station blood tests were conducted which gave a reading of 3.8ug/l, nearly double the prescribed limit of 2.0ug/l. The 23-year-old has no previous convictions of a similar nature and has nothing on his record since 2013. Defending, Michael McGoldrick said that Dent had been advised by a friend to try some edible cannabis products to help him cope with some personal issues he was dealing with. Magistrates handed Dent a 12-month driving ban. He was ordered to pay a fine of £120, costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.

“The 23-year-old has no previous convictions of a similar nature and has nothing on his record since 2013..” so was 10yrs old, not sure legal to bring that up as would of been spent and not relevant,hardly a regular in court like some. Maybe his defence is true, wonder how many now are going to reconsider what they thought was legal. Given that some in Court are given similar punishments for having committed dozens of offences this seems a little harsh,did CPS look at alleged stuff he was using? We all rely on what it says on label – how many over alcohol limit after Xmas pudding and glass of wine or all those chocolate liquors. Prescription medication mixed could also put you in a grey area.
