UPDATED: Firefighters from Ryde are this afternoon (Sunday) working to free a female who has reportedly become trapped inside her vehicle following a crash on the outskirts of Ryde.
Emergency services, including paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and two crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, were called to the incident outside West Ashey Farm at around 15:30.
It is understood the single vehicle has left the carriageway and come to rest in a hedge on an S bend on Ashey Road between The Downs and East Ashey Lane.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has within the last few minutes landed at the scene.
UPDATE @ 17:05 – One female has been cut free from the wreckage of her car by fire crews this evening and has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
The road remains closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for several hours as investigations get underway into the circumstances behind the incident.
The extent of the woman’s injuries is currently unknown, however they are believed to be serious. It is not currently clear whether or not the motorist suffered a medical episode at the wheel.
A hard road closure has been put in place by Island Roads indicating the seriousness of the incident.
UPDATE @ 19:31 – Ashey Road has reopened in both directions.
UPDATE MONDAY: The casualty of yesterday’s collision, a young mum from the Isle of Wight, is in a stable condition and is now making a strong recovery.
