WOMAN SUFFERS BROKEN LEG AFTER BUS FALL

freshwaterbusbrokenlegUPDATED: A woman has suffered a broken leg after falling down a set of stairs on board a double decker Southern Vectis bus this morning (Monday).

Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, including a West Wight First Responder, were called to the incident off Avenue Road, Freshwater shortly after 11:00.

The passenger, believed to be aged in her 60s, has badly broken her leg. It is understood the woman was using the stairs whilst the vehicle was in motion before falling.

One witnesses has told Island Echo:

“Her whole bone was sticking out her leg. It was horrible”.

The bus remained in-situ before leaving the scene near to The Co-Operative store at around 12:20, resulting in delays to the Route 7 service.

UPDATE @ 15:56 – Matt Kitchin, general manager of Southern Vectis has said:

“I can confirm a passenger suffered an injury this morning after falling whilst travelling on our Route 7 bus in Tennyson Road, Freshwater. They were taken to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport by ambulance and we are monitoring their progress carefully.

“We are carrying out an internal investigation to establish how the incident happened.

“Our thoughts are with the passenger and I would like to wish them a very swift recovery.”
