Newport Rowing Club carried on their winning streak in the Men’s Pair competition at Coalporter’s Regatta last weekend.
The county town club were without their regular stroke of Ollie Coulson, but Matt Swiss stepped up to take his seat. Despite being a scratch pair, Matt and regular bowman Toby Batchelor looked a well-matched team. In their heat they quickly took the lead and controlled the race from the front.
The final was a tougher test of the new combination, with all 3 finalists making a strong start off the line. The Newport duo kept their nerve and channelled their power to pull away from the field after the first 100 meters, securing their 6th consecutive victory of the season.
They hope to make a clean sweep for the season at the final regatta of the season on their home river.
Newport Regatta is the only Island rowing regatta to survive the COVID hit season. Racing commences at 10:30 on Saturday 21st August, with the finish line opposite Newport’s historic boathouse. All 3 Island clubs will be well represented, competing against the clubs across the Solent.
