Ventnor Tennis Club coach Linda Jones has claimed an impressive victory at the LTA Seniors Tournament, held at Milford Tennis Club on Tuesday (29th April), after defeating top seed Jenny Hughes in a closely fought final.
Competing in the Over 55 Ladies singles, Linda entered the tournament as the Number 2 seed. In her opening match, she faced Cathy Simpson from Hampshire and delivered a dominant performance with a 6-0 6-1 win.
The semi-final against Madeleine Hyde of Bedfordshire proved more challenging, particularly due to the midday heat. Despite the conditions, Linda powered through with a 6-1 6-2 victory to book her place in the final.
There she met number 1 seed Jenny Hughes from Sussex – a Team GB representative and regular ITF tournament competitor. After a gruelling 2.5-hour match filled with long rallies, Linda emerged victorious with a 6-4 4-6 10-7 win.
Linda has said:
“I’m really pleased with how I played.
“I wasn’t expected to win, as Jenny represents GB and plays regular ITF tournaments. It’s the first singles I’ve played since the Island Games in Guernsey and I now plan to work really hard on my fitness and singles game and compete in ITF tournaments myself.”
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Ventnor Men’s Team travelled to Alverstoke Tennis Club in Gosport for their first fixture in the National Singles League.
The match format consisted of four singles ties followed by 2 doubles matches. Representing Ventnor were Elliot Rugg, Elliot Jones, Hugh Idle and Noah Ford.
They secured an 8-4 victory.
