VAN COLLIDES WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS ON MAIN SHANKLIN ROAD

northroadshanklinvan2UPDATED: A van has been involved in a collision with a set of traffic lights in Shanklin this afternoon (Tuesday).

Emergency services are currently attending the incident on North Road near the junction with Clarendon Road.

The white Ford Transit van has collided with a set of pedestrian crossing lights whilst traveling northbound, causing substantial damage to the front of the vehicle and to the street furniture.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

UPDATE @ 15:55 – One person, believed to be male, has been arrested by Police on suspicion of drink driving and has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station.

The pedestrian crossing has been made safe but will remain out of action.

Recovery of the vehicle has been arranged. The road remains open.

UPDATE @ 16:33 – The vehicle has now been recovered by Stag Lane Motors.

UPDATE @ 19:50 – Police have confirmed the male driver was 3 times over the drink drive limit.
