Police have confirmed that the body of a man in his 20s was found at Shide Chalk Pit yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) – but there is currently no evidence of third party involvement. As previously reported by Island Echo, officers descended on the Burnt House Lane area in Newport shortly before 16:30, soon erecting a number of inner and outer cordons around the abandoned quarry. Detectives from Newport CID were called in to examine the scene and officers were placed on guard duties. It has now been confirmed that the unexpected death of a man in his 20s is not being treated as suspicious. His next of kin have been informed.
All cordons and road closures in the area have been lifted. A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“At this time there is no evidence of third party involvement. “Enquiries are ongoing and a file will be prepared for the Coroner”.
